Charlize Theron Early Life

Charlize Theron, an actress and philanthropist, was born on August 7, 1975, in rural Benoni, South Africa.

Her parents, Charles and Gerda, were co-owners of a road construction company. Growing up in an Afrikaans-speaking family on a working farm near Johannesburg, Theron’s childhood involved tending to livestock, but her true passion for dance emerged at an early age.

To nurture her artistic abilities, she began taking ballet lessons at the age of six. Recognizing her talent, her parents supported her and at the age of 12, she was sent to a boarding school in Johannesburg to further her dance studies.

Unfortunately, the Theron household was plagued by unhappiness. Charles battled alcoholism and became physically abusive. In 1991, when Theron was 15, her father violently attacked both her and her mother. Witnessing the incident, Theron saw her mother, Gerda, shoot and kill Charles. The act was deemed self-defense, and Gerda was never charged with a crime. Following her father’s death, Gerda took over the family business, while Theron fabricated a story that her father had died in a fatal car accident.

At the age of 16, Theron participated in a modeling contest in Johannesburg, which she won. This victory led her to Italy, where she triumphed in the International New Model Today competition, marking the beginning of her modeling career. However, at the age of 18, Theron decided to pursue a career in dance and traveled to New York. Unfortunately, her aspirations were cut short due to severe knee injuries, forcing her to abandon her dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

Charlize Theron Career

Theron initially pursued a career as a dancer, but at the age of 16, she secured a one-year modelling contract after winning a local competition in Salerno, Italy.

Subsequently, she relocated to Milan with her mother. Following a year of modelling in Europe, Theron and her mother moved to the United States, residing in both New York City and Miami.

While in New York, she enrolled at the Joffrey Ballet School to train as a ballet dancer, but her aspirations were cut short due to a knee injury. Theron reminisced about this period in 2008.

I went to New York for three days to model, and then I spent a winter in New York in a friend’s windowless basement apartment. I was broke, I was taking class at the Joffrey Ballet, and my knees gave out. I realized I couldn’t dance anymore, and I went into a major depression. My mom came over from South Africa and said, “Either you figure out what to do next or you come home, because you can sulk in South Africa”.

In the 2003 heist film The Italian Job, Theron played the role of a safe and vault technician, directed by F. Gary Gray and starring alongside Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green, and Donald Sutherland.

The movie, which was an American remake of the 1969 British film of the same name, was a commercial success, earning US$176 million worldwide.

Theron’s performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster (2003) was highly acclaimed, with film critic Roger Ebert describing it as one of the greatest performances in cinema history.

For her portrayal, Theron received the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 76th Academy Awards in February 2004, as well as the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Golden Globe Award.

She made history as the first South African actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress. Following her Oscar win, Theron was listed as one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood by The Hollywood Reporter in 2006, commanding up to US$10 million per film and ranking seventh.

Additionally, AskMen named her the most desirable woman of 2003.

In 2017, Theron took on the role of the cyberterrorist Cipher in The Fate of the Furious, serving as the primary antagonist in the franchise.

Additionally, she portrayed a spy during the time of the Berlin Wall’s collapse in 1989 in Atomic Blonde, a film adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City, directed by David Leitch.

The Fate of The Furious achieved a global box office revenue of US$1.2 billion, while Atomic Blonde was praised by Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times as a sleek showcase for Charlize Theron’s captivating and tough persona, solidifying her status as a top-tier action star following her performances in this movie and Mad Max: Fury Road.
