Ruth Gottesman, formerly known as Levy, was born in 1930 and is an American educator.

She currently serves as the chair of the board of trustees at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) in the Bronx, New York. Additionally, she has been a professor at the institution for many years and is the late David Gottesman’s widow. In February 2024, Gottesman made a generous donation of $1 billion to AECOM, guaranteeing that tuition will forever be free for all upcoming students.

Ruth Levy Gottesman Career

Ruth Levy, later known as Gottesman, began her academic journey at Mount Holyoke College in 1948.

She then transferred to Barnard College, where she completed her bachelor’s degree. Gottesman furthered her education by obtaining a master’s degree in developmental education and a Doctor of Education in human cognition and learning from Teachers College, Columbia University.

In 1968, Gottesman became a part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) at the Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC).

During her time there, she played a significant role in developing widely utilized screening, evaluation, and treatment procedures for individuals with learning disabilities.

Additionally, she established the Adult Literacy Program at CERC in 1992 and co-founded the Fisher Landau Center for the Treatment of Learning Disabilities in 1998.

Currently, Gottesman holds the position of professor emerita in the Department of Pediatrics (Developmental Medicine) and serves as the chair of the board of trustees at AECOM.

Having joined AECOM’s board of trustees in 2002, Gottesman assumed the role of chair from 2007 to 2014.

Following the passing of her successor, Roger W. Einiger, in 2020, she once again took on the position of chair. Furthermore, since 2007, Gottesman has been an esteemed member of the Montefiore Health System board of trustees.

The Montefiore hospital serves as a teaching hospital for the Einstein Medical College.

Ruth Gottesman Personal Life

She wed David Gottesman in 1950. They first met in 1948, prior to her enrollment at Mount Holyoke College, and were married for 72 years until his passing in 2022. The couple had three children and resided in Rye, New York.

David’s estate was valued at $3 billion by Forbes at the time of his death.

Ruth Gottesman Philanthropy Lifestyle

Together with her spouse David, she contributed $25 million to AECOM in 2008. This donation was utilized to establish the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research, the Ruth L. Gottesman Clinical Skills Center, and the Faculty Scholar in Epigenetics at AECOM.

Following David’s passing in 2022, he left a stock portfolio in Berkshire Hathaway to Ruth, with the freedom to utilize it as she saw fit. With a focus on supporting education, Gottesman revealed a $1 billion donation to AECOM in February 2024. This generous gift was intended to provide free tuition to all students at the institution indefinitely.
