Thando Thabethe, born on 18 June 1990, is an esteemed South African actress and Radio DJ.

She gained recognition as the presenter of the popular television show, Thando Bares All, which aired on channel TLC.

Currently, she holds the position of drive time host on 947. Notably, Thando is Nivea’s inaugural brand ambassador in Africa, a testament to her influence and success.

Her accomplishments have been acknowledged by Forbes Africa, as she was included in their prestigious 30 Under 30 list in 2019.

Additionally, Thando serves as the host of 947 Drive With Thando.

Early Life and Education

Thabethe hails from Johannesburg, Gauteng. She completed her education at Mondeor High School and later went on to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom.) Accounting degree at the University of Johannesburg, graduating in 2011.

Following the passing of her father when she was 13, she lived with her mother during her teenage years.

Thabethe’s involvement in theatre productions began during her teenage years and she landed her first TV role at the age of 14.

Additionally, she engaged in theatre productions at UJ Arts Centre while studying at the university and gained experience as a news reader and radio DJ at UJFM, a community radio station affiliated with the University of Johannesburg.

Career

Thabethe commenced her radio career in 2008 at UJFM before transitioning to the popular youth radio station YFM in 2011 during her final year of studies.

Simultaneously, she portrayed the lead character of Thando Nkosi in the sitcom My Perfect Family, which ran for 3 seasons. She later became part of 5FM in 2013 on The Roger Goode Show.

Her notable works include appearances in Club 808, Intersexions, Ngempela, Kowethu, 1s and 2s, and Single Guys.

From 2014 to 2017, she portrayed Nolwazi Buzo on Generations: The Legacy, a South African soap opera.

In 2014, Thabethe was named a Nivea brand ambassador, becoming the first African ambassador for the German body-care brand.

Following her time at 5FM, she hosted her own show on weekdays in 2016, titled The Thando Thabooty Show, which later evolved into The Thabooty Drive in 2017.

Additionally, in 2016, she starred in her debut feature film Mrs Right Guy alongside Dineo Moeketsi, Thapelo Mokoena, and Lehasa Moloi.

In 2016, she co-hosted the South African Music Awards with Somizi Mhlongo, and in 2017, she hosted the South African Film and Television Awards.

Between 2018 and 2020, Thabethe departed from 5FM.

Thabethe launched her television talk show Thando Bares All on TLC, premiering the first episode on 2 June 2018.

During 2018, she also appeared in the thriller drama series Housekeepers as Linda Ndlovu. She continued her role in the show’s second season in 2019.

Additionally, in 2019, she played the lead role of Zinhle Malinga in the successful film Love Lives Here.

In 2019, Thabethe received nominations for Best TV Host and Best Talk Show for Thando Bares All on TLC, ultimately winning the award for Best Talk Show.

After a five-year tenure at 5FM, Thabethe resigned in March 2020. She bid farewell with her final Thabooty show on 5 March 2020. Thabethe later explained her decision to leave the station via Twitter on 7 April 2020.

From 2021 onwards, Thabethe joined 947, taking over the drive time slot at 3pm on March 23, 2021.

On May 12, 2022, she was revealed as a judge for Miss South Africa 2022.

Personal life

Thando’s father died when she was in grade 8 at the age of 13. She also lost her brother Sibu Thabethe, who was shot dead in an armed robbery in 2015.
