Everything We Know About The Old Guard 2 Releasing In 2025

The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 to positive reviews and quickly built a passionate fanbase. Based on a comics series of the same name, the movie tells the story of a team of mercenaries blessed (or cursed) with immortality as they make their way in the world and fight evil forces that seek to exploit their power. Along the way, they discover and recruit a new member and exile one who betrayed them. With the premise established, characters introduced, and the stage set for more, there’s hope that The Old Guard 2 will build on this success, dive deeper into the setting and telling more compelling stories.

While The Old Guard 2 was officially confirmed to be in the works in 2021, less than a year after the original became a summer hit, it took some time for production to begin and, nearly four years later, fans are still waiting for more details. Netflix has yet to provide a release date and observers are left to speculate about when it may finally drop and what the story will be. Just because the producers are being a bit secretive; however, doesn’t mean that fans have nothing to go on.

The Old Guard 2 Should Release in 2025

  • The Old Guard drew mostly on plot elements from the first chapter of the comic series.
  • Issues in the third chapter were just beginning to be released when the first Old Guard movie premiered.
  • It’s not been revealed what The Old Guard 2 will cover.

It’s been a long wait for fans of the first movie, but The Old Guard 2 should be released in 2025, likely early in the year. The sequel was officially announced in early 2021 and filming began in the summer of 2022. As of September 2022, primary filming was done, leaving only reshoots and post-production work to be completed. It seems that this stage is what held up the premier for so long.

While filming officially wrapped over two years ago, shakeups at Netflix apparently held up work on The Old Guard 2 as projects were put on hold during the transition. The CEO change at the streaming company in January 2023 and subsequent fallout seem to have cost over a month of lost time on the movie. Further, it seems that, as editing and other work on the film resumed, it was decided that some new filming was necessary. These reshoots, which took place in October 2024, added more time to the production. These delays, along with the fact that Netflix has not added The Old Guard 2 to its list of upcoming movies for December, indicate that fans shouldn’t expect the release before next year. Still, there’s good reason to hope it will be released early in 2025.

One of the stars of the movie, Charlize Theron, has expressed her confidence in the production and, last summer, specifically said that it should be released “soon.” While these statements came before the reshoots, as a producer on The Old Guard, it’s safe to assume that Theron has a good idea of the movie’s status and her promise of a premier in the near future should be comforting to fans eager to finally see the sequel.

With reshoots complete, post-production well underway, and Theron hyping up the movie’s release, it’s likely that The Old Guard 2 will be launching sooner rather than later. December 2024 has definitely been ruled out, but early 2025 appears to be the most likely scenario. When it doesn’t finally come out, fans can look forward to a new story featuring the characters they already love, along with some new ones.

The entire main cast of The Old Guard is set to return for the sequel, including Charlize Theron, who plays the immortal Andromache of Scythia, and KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, the newest immortal to be discovered. In addition, it appears that Van Veronica Ngo, whose character Quynh only appears in flashbacks and in a surprise reveal at the end of the first movie, is likely to have a larger role this time around. Joining these veterans will be a couple of new actors with plenty of experience in action films and thrillers.
