Burna Boy Declares ‘African Giant’ Persona Dead, Introduces ‘Big 7’ Alter Ego
Grammy award-winning Afrobeats artist Burna Boy has announced the symbolic end of his ‘African Giant’ persona, attributing its demise to betrayal and criticism from his own people. This revelation was shared via the Instagram page of his upcoming album, No Signs of Weakness.
In his statement, Burna Boy expressed that the ‘African Giant’ was “killed by his own people,” leading to the emergence of a new alter ego, ‘Big 7’. He described ‘Big 7’ as a protective figure guarding the remnants of his broken heart, while the ‘African Giant’ continues to haunt him. He wrote:
The ‘African Giant’ is dead. Burna Boy died. His own people killed him. Then ‘BIG 7’ was born to protect what was left of ‘Burna Boy’. BURNA BOY and BIG 7 fight each other a lot because while BIG 7 is only protecting the final and only existing piece of BURNA BOYโs broken heart, the ‘African Giant’ still haunts BURNA BOY.”
This introspective declaration follows Burna Boy’s earlier decision to relinquish the ‘African Giant’ title to fellow Nigerian artist Falz in August 2024. At that time, Burna Boy cited disillusionment stemming from backlash during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, where some protesters called for a boycott of his music. He stated that the fight in him died during the 2020 EndSARS protests when he felt unsupported by his compatriots.
Despite these sentiments, Burna Boy celebrated the 5th anniversary of his African Giant album in July 2024 with a YouTube Live performance. He described the album as holding a special place in his heart, representing a pivotal moment in his career and a powerful statement of African pride.
As fans anticipate the release of *No Signs of Weakness*, Burna Boy’s transformation from the ‘African Giant’ to ‘Big 7’ signifies a new chapter in his artistic journey, reflecting personal growth and resilience in the face of adversity.
