The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security advisory warning American citizens against non-essential travel to military and government facilities in Abuja amid heightened global security concerns.

In a statement released on Monday, the US Embassy disclosed that all embassy staff and their family members are currently prohibited from visiting military installations or other government sites in Abuja unless on official duty.

This precautionary measure follows unspecified global developments that have triggered increased security protocols and a reevaluation of movements around sensitive locations within the Nigerian capital.

The advisory urges American citizens living in or traveling to Nigeria to remain vigilant, especially in areas frequented by expatriates, Westerners, and government personnel. It also recommends avoiding large gatherings, maintaining unpredictable routines, and ensuring familiarity with emergency exits in public buildings.

โ€œDue to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,โ€ the statement read.

Recommended Precautionary Measures for US Citizens:

  • Stay alert in public spaces, particularly where foreigners and officials gather.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel and large gatherings.

  • Refrain from maintaining predictable movement patterns.

  • Know emergency exit routes in buildings.

  • Review and update personal security plans regularly.

Despite these restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational for routine and emergency services.

US citizens requiring further information or assistance are advised to visit the official website of the US Embassy in Nigeria.
