In the year 2010, Mann and stockbroker Derek Peterson established the weGrow store, which specialized in selling hydroponics equipment designed for cultivating medical marijuana. However, after two years, weGrow had to shut down due to legal disputes between the business partners.
Moving forward to 2013, Mann faced a conviction for defrauding the city of Oakland, California, as a result of his involvement with his real estate company, MannEdge Properties. This incident brought legal consequences for Mann and highlighted his deceptive actions.
Early Life
Dharminder Mann was born on May 29, 1984, to Surinder Mann and Baljit Singh Mann, who immigrated from India to the United States.
The Singh family is the owner of Friendly Cab, a taxi cab operator located in Oakland, California.
In addition to their cab business, they have also been involved in various local real estate ventures since 1980, owning over 130 properties.
Mann’s upbringing involved living in a one-bedroom apartment in the Bay Area, which was shared with three other families.
Due to his parents’ focus on managing their business, Mann mentioned that instead of spending time with him, they provided him with financial resources to pursue his interests.
Early Career and Legal Issues
Mann embarked on his entrepreneurial journey at the age of nineteen by establishing a real estate company.
Over the next decade, he ventured into various other businesses, such as luxury car rental services and mortgage refinancing, with varying degrees of success.
In January 2010, Mann co-founded weGrow, a hydroponics retailer, alongside Derek Peterson, a former stockbroker.
The duo set up a supply store in Oakland, California, to sell hydroponics equipment and had plans to expand through franchises in eight other states.
However, by early 2011, the weGrow store had to be shut down, leading to legal disputes between Peterson and Mann.
Peterson accused Mann of operating a “hydroponzi scheme” in an interview with Mother Jones and filed lawsuits against the company for unpaid debts.
In response, Mann’s spokesperson alleged that Peterson fabricated the accusations due to a fallout in their partnership.
Eventually, Mann countersued Peterson, resulting in a settlement involving cash and stocks in Peterson’s company.
In 2012, Mann faced thirteen felony charges related to fraud, stemming from his alleged misconduct in a city beautification program while managing MannEdge Properties, his real estate firm, in 2008 and 2009.
The charges were later reduced to five felony counts, to which Mann pleaded no contest in 2013.
He received a sentence of five years of probation, along with a $10,000 fine and restitution.
Mann claimed in 2021 that the conviction had been expunged, as reported by The New York Times.

In 2018, Dhar Mann established Dhar Mann Studios, a video production company that creates content for various social media platforms, including YouTube.
Initially focusing on motivational videos, Mann later transitioned to producing morality plays.
In 2021, Mann signed a deal with the Creative Artists Agency and introduced a mobile app for users to access his studio’s content.
The studio’s videos often feature a recurring cast of actors.
Described by The New York Times as presenting timely narratives on topics like police-calling Karens and Covid-19 hoarders, the videos are likened to educational short films from past decades with a moralistic and clickbait style.
Vulture characterized them as feel-good content aimed at promoting kindness.
In 2023, the studio unveiled “Jay & Mikey,” a comedy kids’ show based on characters from previous short film series.
The show stars Shaun Dixon and Kaido Lee Roberts as middle-schoolers Jay and Mikey. By mid-2023, the studio’s YouTube videos had amassed over 11 billion views.
In February 2023, a group of actors employed by Dhar Mann Studios took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the working conditions and inadequate pay they were receiving.
The actors decided to stage protests outside one of Mann’s studio lots, demanding better treatment.
Actor Charles Laughlin revealed that they had requested a meeting with Mann to discuss the working conditions, but their request was denied.
Laughlin also alleged that actress Jessica Ruth Bell was fired after the actors requested the meeting.
Another actor, Colin Borden, claimed that those who spoke out against the poor working conditions were immediately dismissed.
Borden further highlighted that many of the actors employed by Mann were struggling to afford their rent.
Following the protests, Mann responded through his YouTube channel and Instagram account, refuting the claims made by the protesting actors and accusing them of spreading false information about his studio, family, and himself.
He provided an explanation of how the studio operated and disclosed the hourly rates for actors.
Personal Life
In 2014, Mann was romantically involved with businesswoman Lilly Ghalichi, who gained recognition for her appearance on the reality TV show Shahs of Sunset.
Mann crossed paths with his future fiancée Laura Avila in 2015. Together, they oversee LiveGlam, a cosmetics company that Mann established in 2015.
Their journey as a couple took a new turn in 2020 when they welcomed their first child into the world.
Towards the end of 2020, Mann made a significant investment by acquiring a mansion in Calabasas, California.
Interestingly, this property was previously owned by the well-known media personality Khloé Kardashian.
In addition to their real estate ventures in Oakland, Mann and his brother Harmit also possess properties throughout the city.
