Early Life

Megan Denise Fox was born on May 16, 1986, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Her parents, Gloria Darlene and Franklin Thomas Fox, divorced when she was three years old.

She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Tony Tonachio, along with her sister.

Fox had a strict upbringing, being raised in a Pentecostal household and later attending Catholic school for 12 years. She was not allowed to have a boyfriend or invite friends over to her house.

Fox’s stepfather was verbally, mentally, and emotionally abusive until his death. During her adolescence, she developed an eating disorder and struggled with manic depression, which ran in her family.

Fox lived with her mother until she became financially independent.

At the age of five, Fox began her training in dance and drama in Kingston, Tennessee.

She continued her training after moving to St. Petersburg, Florida at the age of 10. At 13, she started modeling and won several awards at a modeling and talent convention.

Fox attended high school at Morningside Academy and later St. Lucie West Centennial High School.

At 17, she tested out of school via correspondence in order to pursue her career in Los Angeles, California.

Fox openly discussed her experiences during her school years, revealing that she faced bullying in middle school which led her to eat lunch in the bathroom to avoid being targeted with ketchup packets.

She emphasized that the issue was not related to her appearance, but rather to her preference for befriending boys, which did not sit well with some individuals.

Furthermore, Fox admitted that she was never popular in high school, feeling like an outcast as she mainly associated with male friends due to her assertive personality that did not resonate well with other girls.

She mentioned having only one close female friend throughout her life.

Additionally, Fox expressed her disdain for formal education, stating that she never truly believed in its value and found the education she received to be irrelevant, leading her to disengage from that aspect of her schooling.

Career

In 2001, Fox made her acting debut in the romantic comedy Holiday in the Sun, portraying the character of spoiled heiress Brianna Wallace and serving as a rival to Alex Stewart (Ashley Olsen).

The film was released directly to DVD on November 20, 2001. Over the next few years, she made guest appearances on the sitcoms What I Like About You and Two and a Half Men.

Additionally, Fox had an uncredited extra role in the action film Bad Boys II (2003).

Moving forward to 2004, Fox had her first major film role in the musical comedy Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, starring alongside Lindsay Lohan.

She played the supporting character of Carla Santini, who was a rival to Lola (Lohan’s character). During this time, Fox also secured a regular role on the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith.

She portrayed the character Sydney Shanowski, taking over the role from Nicole Paggi. Fox appeared in the show’s second and third seasons until it was canceled by ABC in May 2006.

In 2007, Fox achieved significant recognition by landing the lead female role of Mikaela Banes in the live-action film Transformers, based on the popular toy and cartoon franchise.

She portrayed the love interest of Shia LaBeouf’s character, Sam Witwicky. Fox’s performance earned her a nomination for a “Breakthrough Performance” MTV Movie Award and three Teen Choice Award nominations.

She signed on for two more Transformers sequels, reprising her role as Mikaela in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

However, there was controversy surrounding her appearance during the filming of the sequel, as director Michael Bay instructed her to gain ten pounds.

The film was released worldwide on June 24, 2009, and achieved great success at the box office.

In 2009, Fox starred in the third installment of the Transformers series, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but was ultimately not included due to controversial statements she made about director Bay.

She revealed in GQ Magazine that she lost around 30 pounds during filming by consuming mainly water and vinegar, leading to a dispute with the director over her weight loss.

Bay claimed in June 2009 that Fox was fired at the request of executive producer Steven Spielberg, a statement Spielberg refuted.

Fox took on her first lead role post-Transformers in the film Jennifer’s Body, where she played the title character.

Initially receiving mixed reviews, the film later gained a cult following and was reevaluated as a “forgotten feminist classic.”

Diablo Cody, the screenwriter, mentioned that the film was wrongly marketed towards a young male audience by executives.

In April 2009, Fox began filming the superhero western Jonah Hex, portraying Tallulah Black / Leila, the love interest of Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin).

Despite being top-billed, Fox described her role as more of a cameo.

The film, released in June 2010, was a critical and commercial disappointment in the U.S., leading to the cancellation of its international distribution.

It was even dubbed the “worst picture of the year” by the Houston Film Critics Society.

On September 12, 2018, Megan Fox was confirmed to star in the Korean War film The Battle of Jangsari, alongside Korean actor Kim Myung-min, portraying the lead role of Marguerite Higgins, an American news reporter.

In 2019, Fox appeared in the mystery-fantasy film Above the Shadows with Olivia Thirlby and Alan Ritchson, under the direction of Claudia Myers.

The movie was distributed by Gravitas Ventures on July 19, 2019. Additionally, she was part of the cast of Zeroville, directed by James Franco, a film that had been filmed in 2014.

Unfortunately, the movie received negative reviews from critics and did not perform well at the box office.

The following year, in 2020, Fox starred in the family comedy film Think Like a Dog, opposite Josh Duhamel, which was released on video on demand on June 9, 2020.

She also took on the lead role in the action film Rogue, which premiered on August 28, 2020.

In 2021, Fox appeared in the thrillers Midnight in the Switchgrass with Emile Hirsch and Bruce Willis, directed by Randall Emmett, as well as Till Death, directed by S.K. Dale.

Moving on to 2022, Fox starred in the drama comedy Big Gold Brick, alongside Oscar Isaac, Andy García, Lucy Hale, and Emory Cohen, directed by Brian Petsos.

She also had a role in the musical drama Taurus, alongside Machine Gun Kelly, Naomi Wild, and Lil Tjay.

Looking ahead to 2023, Fox graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and played the character of crime boss Alana in the thriller film Johnny & Clyde with Tyson Ritter.

She also portrayed Gina in the fourth installment of the Expendables franchise, released in September of the same year.

In November 2023, Fox released her debut book titled Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, a collection of her own poetry.

Personal Life

In 2009, a group of fashion-motivated criminals known as the “Bling Ring” targeted Fox and robbed her then-boyfriend Brian Austin Green’s home in order to gain access to her possessions.

Fox has a condition called clubbed thumb, which is a form of brachydactyly.

She has openly discussed her struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), insecurities, self-harming, and her low self-esteem.

Additionally, she has acknowledged that her Christian faith remains a significant aspect of her life and helps to keep her grounded.

Both Fox and her former husband Green were avid supporters of Generosity Water. They generously funded the construction of more than ten water wells for the organization.

When it comes to relationships and her sexuality, Fox has expressed a general distrust and dislike of men.

She has also debunked the perception of herself as a “wild and crazy sexpot,” stating that she is actually quite asocial and prefers staying at home rather than going out.

Furthermore, she has emphasized that she cannot engage in sexual relationships with someone she does not love.

Fox identifies as bisexual and believes that all individuals are born with the capacity to be attracted to both sexes.

In 2009, she candidly stated, “I have no doubt that I am bisexual. However, I must admit that I am a hypocrite: I would never date a bisexual woman because it would mean she has also been intimate with men, and I find men to be so unclean that I would never want to be with a woman who has been with a man.”

In an interview with InStyle in July 2021, Fox shared that she has had a significant impact on people’s lives by helping them understand and accept their sexuality.

She expressed how rewarding and moving it is to be a part of something that assists individuals in figuring out their identity and finding comfort in it.

Being referred to as a bisexual icon is one of the things she takes great pride in.

Fox is known for her collection of tattoos, each holding a special meaning to her. These include the Chinese symbol for “strength” on the back of her neck, a quote from King Lear on her wrist, and a yin and yang symbol on her left wrist.

She also has a crescent moon entwined with a star on her ankle, a poem near her breast, and a Friedrich Nietzsche quote on her back.

While some tattoos were dedicated to specific individuals, she clarified that they are not necessarily homage tattoos.

She had her ex-husband’s name tattoo covered and removed a Marilyn Monroe portrait due to the negative energy associated with the late actress.

Additionally, she has a tattoo on her collarbone in Spanish and various smaller tattoos on her fingers, including dots, numbers, and a crescent moon.

Relationship

Fox and actor Brian Austin Green began dating in 2004 after meeting on the set of Hope & Faith. At the time, Fox was 18 years old while Green was 30.

Despite the age difference, Fox had to convince Green that she was mature and had more to offer than just her age.

They got engaged in November 2006 but ended their engagement in February 2009. However, they reportedly got engaged again on June 1, 2010.

Fox maintained that they had been continuously engaged since 2006.

Fox and Green got married on June 24, 2010, in a private ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort on Maui.

They have three sons together, born in 2012, 2014, and 2016. Fox also became a stepmother to Green’s son from a previous relationship.

However, their marriage faced challenges, and Fox filed for divorce on August 21, 2015, shortly after announcing their separation.

They reconciled in early 2016 and were expecting their third child.

In April 2019, Fox filed to dismiss her second attempt for a divorce. However, in May 2020, Green announced their separation after nearly 10 years of marriage.

In November 2020, Fox filed for divorce from Green for the second time, and the divorce was finalized on October 15, 2021.

In June 2020, Fox went public about her relationship with singer Machine Gun Kelly.

They confirmed their relationship a few weeks after the release of Machine Gun Kelly’s song “Bloody Valentine,” which featured Fox in its music video.

On January 12, 2022, Fox announced their engagement. However, on March 21, 2024, Fox announced that their engagement had been called off.
