She has been a member of the Playbox Theatre Company since the age of 3. Turner has two older brothers, and unfortunately, her twin passed away in utero.
Growing up in a large Edwardian house near Leamington Spa, Turner reminisces, “My childhood was quite enjoyable.
We had pigsties, barns, and a paddock, and we used to play around in the mud.” She had a tutor on the set of Game of Thrones until she turned 16.
Turner excelled academically, achieving five GCSE A-grades and four Bs, with one of the Bs in Drama.
Career
Turner was selected to portray the character of Sansa Stark, a young noblewoman, in the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones in August 2009.
The filming commenced in July 2010, when Turner was merely 14 years old. This marked her debut in the television industry.
Her drama teacher played a pivotal role in motivating her to audition for the role. In order to accurately portray Sansa, Turner transformed her blonde hair into auburn, although she later opted for wigs starting from season 7.
In recognition of her exceptional performance as Sansa, Turner received a nomination for the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Series – Supporting Young Actress in 2012, alongside her on-screen sister, Maisie Williams.
Turner’s portrayal of Sansa spanned across all eight seasons of the show.
In her role as Sansa Stark, Sophie Turner was advised to lose weight and revealed that she faced mental health challenges during her teenage years on screen.
In 2013, she made her debut in a movie as the main character in the independent thriller “Another Me,” adapted from Catherine MacPhail’s novel of the same title. Turner portrayed Adeline March in the 2013 TV film “The Thirteenth Tale.”
She also appeared in the comedy “Barely Lethal” in 2013, sharing the screen with Hailee Steinfeld.
Turner lent her voice to the audiobook version of Lev Grossman’s short story “The Girl in the Mirror,” featured in the anthology “Dangerous Women” edited by George R. R. Martin.
Additionally, she narrated Cassandra Clare’s “City of Heavenly Fire” audiobook in 2014. Turner was the face of Karen Millen’s “The Journey” campaign in the same year.
She took on the role of mutant Jean Grey in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which hit theaters in May 2016 to mixed reviews.
Turner also co-hosted the web series “Powershift” with the Huffington Post during the summer of 2016.
In March 2017, she made an announcement about becoming the patron of Women for Women, an organization that provides support to female war survivors.
By August 2017, Turner expressed her belief that her social media following played a significant role in securing a casting opportunity for an undisclosed project, rather than her acting abilities. She stated, “[I]t was a competition between me and another girl who is a much better actress than I am, far superior, but I had the followers, so I got the job.”
In June 2017, she initiated a collaboration with Wella Hair and became their first international brand ambassador.
Later in November 2017, Turner was chosen to portray Juliane Koepcke in the film Girl Who Fell From the Sky, and she is also involved in its production.
During March and April 2018, she filmed the independent movie Heavy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Turner reprised her role as Jean Grey in the X-Men film Dark Phoenix, which is set in 1992 and continues the storyline from Apocalypse. The film was released in June 2019.
She has been featured in print campaigns for the renowned luxury designer brand Louis Vuitton.
In September 2019, Turner was cast in the thrilling television series Survive.
In 2022, Turner made a brief appearance as Erica in the teenage black comedy Do Revenge.
In a pivotal scene, her character is falsely accused of drug possession and delivers an “over-the-top” reaction, which became viral due to Turner’s deliberate portrayal inspired by intense performances by actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson.
Personal Life
Turner and American singer Joe Jonas started their relationship in 2016. They got engaged in October 2017 and tied the knot on 1 May 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Initially, the couple resided in New York City. However, they also had a second wedding ceremony in Carpentras, France on 29 June 2019.
They are blessed with two daughters, born in July 2020 and July 2022. Turner served as the inspiration for the song “Hesitate” on the Jonas Brothers reunion album, Happiness Begins, which was written by Jonas as a love letter to her.
Unfortunately, in early September 2023, Jonas filed for divorce from Turner in Miami, Florida.
Both Turner and Jonas confirmed the mutual decision via Instagram. Following the divorce filing, Turner took legal action to allow their daughters, who were born in the United States, to return to England.
This was because the former couple had registered England as their permanent residence in April of that year. In October, Jonas and Turner reached a temporary custody agreement.
