Early Life and Modelling Career

Padukone was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 5 January 1986 to Konkani-speaking Indian parents. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a former professional badminton player, while her mother, Ujjala, works as a travel agent. Her younger sister, Anisha, is a golfer. The family moved to Bangalore, India when Padukone was just a year old. She attended Sophia High School in Bangalore and completed her pre-university education at Mount Carmel College. Initially, she enrolled at the Indira Gandhi National Open University for a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology but had to drop out due to conflicts with her modeling career.

Padukone has mentioned that she was socially awkward as a child and didn’t have many friends. Her main focus was on badminton, which she played competitively from a young age. She followed a strict routine, waking up at five in the morning for physical training, going to school, playing badminton, completing homework, and then going to sleep. Despite her dedication to badminton, she also participated in baseball at state level tournaments. Alongside her education and sports career, Padukone started working as a child model and later transitioned to becoming a fashion model in the tenth grade. In 2004, she embarked on a full-time modeling career under the guidance of Prasad Bidapa.

Padukone started to receive offers for film roles shortly after. Feeling inexperienced, she decided to enroll in a course at Anupam Kher’s film academy.

Farah Khan, the director, noticed her in Reshammiya’s music video and chose her for a role in her upcoming film, then called Happy New Year. Rodricks also played a part in helping her land the role by recommending her to Malaika Arora, who then recommended her to Khan.

Personal Life

Padukone maintains a strong connection with her family and regularly visits them in Bangalore, her hometown. She resides in Prabhadevi, a neighborhood in Mumbai, and has expressed missing her parents’ presence there. A devout Hindu, Padukone views religion as a significant part of her life and frequently visits temples and other religious sites.

During the filming of Bachna Ae Haseeno in 2008, Padukone entered into a romantic relationship with her co-star Ranbir Kapoor. She openly discussed the relationship and even got a tattoo of his initials on the back of her neck. She mentioned that the relationship had a profound impact on her, helping her become more confident and sociable. However, the couple parted ways a year later, with Padukone admitting to feeling betrayed for an extended period. In a 2010 interview, she accused Kapoor of infidelity, a claim he later acknowledged. Despite their past, they managed to reconcile their friendship while working on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Following this, Padukone chose to keep her personal life private. However, in 2017, she affectionately spoke about her relationship with her frequent co-star Ranveer Singh, whom she started dating in August 2012. In October 2018, the couple announced their upcoming marriage. The next month, they tied the knot in traditional Konkani Hindu and Sikh Anand Karaj ceremonies at Lake Como, Italy. In February 2024, the couple shared on Instagram that they were expecting their first child.

Acting Career

Padukone marked her debut in acting with Aishwarya (2006), a Kannada film helmed by Indrajit Lankesh. The romantic comedy was a remake of the Telugu film Manmadhudu, where she played the lead role opposite actor Upendra. The movie turned out to be a hit at the box office. R. G. Vijayasarathy from Rediff.com praised Padukone’s on-screen presence, while also suggesting that she should focus on improving her emotional scenes. Towards the end of 2006, Farah Khan’s Happy New Year was put on hold, and Padukone was instead chosen for the masala film Om Shanti Om (2007). The film, set in the backdrop of the Hindi film industry, narrates the tale of a struggling actor who is reborn to seek vengeance for a deceased film star. Shah Rukh Khan played the lead role, with Padukone portraying dual characters – a star from the 1970s and a budding actress. To prepare for her role, Padukone watched movies of actresses Helen and Hema Malini to grasp their body language. Her voice in the film was dubbed by voice artist Mona Ghosh Shetty. In one of the songs, “Dhoom Taana”, Padukone showcased her skills in Indian classical dance, captivating audiences with her use of hasta mudras (hand gestures), as mentioned by Dorling Kindersley. Om Shanti Om emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, earning a global revenue of ₹1.49 billion (US$18 million). Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama believed that Padukone possessed the qualities to become a top star. She was honored with the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and received her first Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress. Bollywood Hungama highlighted that the success of Om Shanti Om was a turning point in her career.

Continuing her involvement in high-budget action cinema, Padukone reunited with Anand for the film Fighter (2024), sharing the screen with Hrithik Roshan. In their portrayals of Indian Air Force officers, both Roshan and Padukone underwent martial arts training. WION’s Shomini Singh remarked that Padukone “looks stunning and exhibits good chemistry with Roshan; however, her capabilities as an actress are not fully utilized.” Some critics expressed disappointment that her successive roles in predominantly male-centric films limited her opportunities for substantial performances. Subsequently, Padukone appeared alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas in Kalki 2898 AD, a Telugu science fiction film directed by Nag Ashwin, which was produced with a record budget of ₹6 billion (US$72 million). Set in a dystopian future, she portrayed a pregnant test subject on the run. Sukanya Verma noted her “significant presence even in a passive role,” while Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath suggested that she “has little to do beyond appearing distressed.” Both Kalki 2898 AD and Fighter have emerged as the two highest-grossing Indian films of 2024, with the former grossing over ₹9 billion (US$110 million) globally.

Padukone is set to join Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe franchise in the ensemble action sequel Singham Again, featuring Ajay Devgn in the lead role.
