Early Life and Education
Eduardo Luiz Saverin was born into a prosperous Jewish-Brazilian family in São Paulo.
Later, his family relocated to Rio de Janeiro. His father, Roberto Saverin, was involved in various business sectors such as clothing, shipping, energy, and real estate.
On the other hand, his mother, Sandra, pursued a career as a psychologist. Eduardo has two siblings.
His grandfather, Eugenio Saverin, originally from Romania, established Tip Top, a chain of children’s clothing stores.
In 1993, the entire family immigrated to the United States and settled in Miami, Florida.
For his education, Saverin attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami. Subsequently, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he resided in Eliot House, became a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club, and served as the president of the Harvard Investment Association.
During his time as an undergraduate at Harvard, Saverin utilized his interest in meteorology to predict hurricane patterns and successfully earned $300,000 through investments in oil futures.
In 2006, he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
Additionally, Saverin is affiliated with the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, specifically the Eta Psi chapter at Harvard University.
Career
During his time as a junior at Harvard, Saverin crossed paths with fellow Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg, who was a sophomore at the time.
Recognizing the absence of a dedicated social networking platform for Harvard students, the two collaborated to launch Facebook in 2004.
They both decided to contribute $1,000 each to kickstart the site. Subsequently, Zuckerberg and Saverin each agreed to further invest $18,000 in the venture.
Serving as a co-founder, Saverin assumed the responsibilities of chief financial officer and business manager.
On May 15, 2012, Business Insider published an exclusive email from Zuckerberg outlining his decision to remove Saverin from Facebook and reduce his ownership stake.
Zuckerberg privately expressed, “Eduardo is not cooperating at all… We now essentially need to transfer our intellectual property to a new entity and face the legal battle… I will simply exclude him and then reach a settlement.
He will receive something, I’m certain, but he is entitled to it… He needs to sign documents for investments, but he is delaying, and I cannot tolerate the delay.”
Zuckerberg’s legal counsel cautioned him that the dilution could lead to a lawsuit for breaching fiduciary duties.
Facebook initiated legal action against Saverin, contending that the stock purchase agreement he signed in October 2005 was void.
In response, Saverin sued Zuckerberg, alleging that Zuckerberg misused Facebook’s funds (which included Saverin’s investment) for personal expenses during the summer.
In 2009, both lawsuits were resolved out of court. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and the company reaffirmed Saverin’s position as a co-founder of Facebook.
Following the settlement, Saverin signed a non-disclosure agreement. In 2010, Saverin co-founded Aporta, an online platform for charitable causes.
In 2015, he launched his venture capital firm, B Capital, focusing on investments in Southeast Asia and India.
By 2016, Saverin’s fund had sealed initial deals exceeding $140 million in Asia, including investments in Ninja Van, a Singapore-based logistics company specializing in last-mile parcel delivery across Southeast Asia.
In addition to forming B Capital, in early 2020, Saverin invested in Antler, an early-stage VC fund and startup accelerator founded by his friend and Harvard classmate, Magnus Grimeland.
