Jorja Alice Smith was born on June 11, 1997, in Walsall, West Midlands, England. A Jamaican father and a British mother raised her. Music has always been part of her life; her father, Peter, is a singer who performed with the 2nd Naicha music group.
Jolene’s mother is a jewelry designer who runs her own business. Jorja grew up with her younger brother, Luca. At eight, she began taking piano lessons after her father encouraged her. Smith attended Aldridge School, where she studied classical singing and won a scholarship.
She was just 11 years old when Smith began writing songs and later began uploading cover songs and videos of herself on YouTube. At the age of 15, she was scouted by a manager. Upon her high school graduation, Smith moved to London to pursue her music career by the age of 18.

In London, she met Irish singer Maverick Sabre, with whom she signed in 2015. Then, she began recording her debut single, “Blue Lights,” in January 2016.
Smith dropped the song into SoundCloud, which wound up amassing over 400k plays in its first month of release. In May of that year, she released a follow-up single, “Where Did I Go?” which grabbed the attention of Drake.

In early 2017, rapper Drake approached Smith to perform as a special guest on his “Boy Meets World Tour.” That same year, she was featured on Drake’s two songs from his mixtape “More Life.” In 2018, the American singer Kali Uchis dropped her debut album “Isolation.” The lead single from the album was “Tyrant,” in which Smith was featured in May 2017.
In October and November of that year, she was named to perform at Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour as an opening act. In February 2018, she co-wrote and served “I Am,” a track featured on Kendrick Lamar’s soundtrack project for “ Black Panther .”
