Early Life and Modeling
Fimmel was born in the vicinity of Echuca, Victoria, Australia and grew up in Lockington.
He is the youngest of three brothers and the son of Jennie, a recreation officer for disabled individuals, and Chris, a cattle farmer.
Initially aiming to become a professional Australian rules footballer, Fimmel relocated to Melbourne to join the St Kilda Football Club in the AFL.
Unfortunately, a broken leg prevented him from playing before the season commenced. Although he was admitted to RMIT for an architecture program, he decided to postpone his studies to travel overseas.
Fimmel’s modeling journey commenced when he was discovered working out at a gym in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn by Matthew Anderson’s flatmate, a talent scout for the Chadwick Models agency.
He ventured to the United States and was immediately signed by LA Models in 2002 after visiting their office with no money and no shoes.
Handpicked by Jennifer Starr, he became the first male globally to secure a six-figure contract to model exclusively for Calvin Klein for a year, and the final one to be personally recruited by the brand’s namesake designer.
He was the face of CK’s Crave men’s fragrance campaign and showcased the brand’s iconic underwear.
Reports emerged that one of his billboards in London had to be removed due to complaints from a car club about traffic congestion and accidents caused by female drivers slowing down to look, but Fimmel dismissed it as an internet rumor.
In 2002, he was recognized as one of the world’s sexiest bachelors by People magazine in the United States and was considered the most sought-after male model globally.
Some journalists have suggested that Fimmel served as the inspiration for ‘Jerry’ Smith Jerrod, the heartthrob from Sex and the City.
Fimmel has graced numerous magazine covers, such as Esquire, Rogue, Empire, At Large, Good Weekend, Numero Homme, and TV Guide in the United States.
He declined an invitation from Australia’s Seven Network to be a guest judge on the TV show Make Me A Supermodel.
Acting Career
2001–2012: Early Career
Fimmel embarked on his successful acting journey by making appearances in the music videos for Janet Jackson’s hit song “Someone to Call My Lover” and Jennifer Lopez’s original version of “I’m Real” in 2001.
Under the guidance of Ivana Chubbuck, the renowned Hollywood acting coach who has worked with stars like Brad Pitt and Jared Leto, Fimmel dedicated two years to build up the courage to audition for his first role.
He firmly believed that overcoming fears and allowing oneself to be vulnerable in front of others is a crucial aspect of acting.
In 2003, Fimmel secured the lead role in The WB series Tarzan, which CNN hailed as one of the “five hottest things happening in entertainment right now”. He impressed audiences by performing most of his own stunts.
Additionally, he appeared in two television pilots: the drama Rocky Point alongside Lauren Holly in 2005 for The WB, and the crime thriller Southern Comfort with Madeleine Stowe in 2006 for Fox.
Throughout his career, Fimmel has portrayed a wide range of characters on both the small and big screens.
In 2008, he played a murderer in the Australian film Restraint and a carefree party boy in Surfer, Dude, starring alongside Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
In 2010, he showcased his versatility by portraying a compassionate cowboy in Pure Country 2: The Gift and a forensic photographer in the Australian horror film Needle, alongside Ben Mendelsohn.
Fimmel also took on the role of a talented classical pianist in Ivory, an independent film that was praised for its creative and unconventional approach.
The film was an Official Selection at the 2010 Montreal World Film Festival and the Strasbourg International Film Festival.
Produced by Academy Award-winner Gray Frederickson, Ivory also featured Martin Landau and Peter Stormare.
It delves into the complex lives of classical pianists at a prestigious American conservatory, exploring themes of personal and professional rivalry.
Fimmel took on the role of Helweg, a prison guard, in the 2010 film The Experiment.
Initially, Elijah Wood was supposed to play the role, but he withdrew from the project for unknown reasons, leading Fimmel to step in instead.
The film is based on a real-life experiment conducted by Stanford University, which had to be cut short due to the extreme behavior of the ‘guards’ and the resulting depression experienced by the ‘prisoners’.
In A&E’s 2009 series The Beast, Fimmel starred alongside Patrick Swayze. He portrayed Ellis Dove, a rookie undercover FBI agent partnered with the experienced cop Charles Barker, played by Swayze.
Unfortunately, production of the series was halted after 13 episodes due to Swayze’s passing from pancreatic cancer.
Fimmel also appeared in two episodes of NBC’s 2010 action-adventure Chase, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, where he played the character Mason Boyle, a fugitive.
Additionally, he featured in FX’s TV pilot Outlaw Country in 2011, alongside Luke Grimes.
The show was described as a modern drama centered around a southern organized crime family, with Fimmel portraying a rugged gang member and the best friend of the main character.
In 2012, Fimmel took on the lead role in the film Harodim, alongside Peter Fonda.
The movie follows a former intelligence officer trained in black ops as he tracks down the world’s most wanted terrorist, only to find himself compromised by his own chain of command.
Furthermore, Fimmel co-starred with Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria in the 2012 redneck Southern comedy film The Baytown Outlaws.
He played one of the three Oodie brothers, who find themselves in over their heads when they agree to help a woman retrieve her godson from her deadbeat ex-husband.
2020–present: television and film balance
In 2020, Fimmel featured as a TV presenter in Here Are the Young Men, which was adapted from a novel about three Dublin high school graduates whose epic binge to mark the end of an era is blighted by catastrophe.
From 2020 to 2022, he appeared in HBO Max’s science fiction drama Raised by Wolves from director Ridley Scott and Scott Free Productions, which marked Fimmel’s return to television.
It was a role that earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards.
The dystopian narrative depicts him as an atheist soldier with a mysterious backstory in a new society created after a war sparked by religious differences decimates Earth.
In a review of his role as a killer-for-hire in the 2021 action-crime thriller Die in a Gunfight, Forbes states that Fimmel “steals every scene he’s in and has what could be the most compelling and morally tangled [character] arc of anyone in the entire story”.
Fimmel played a genius, reclusive and kooky inventor in the science fiction, neo-noir film Zone 414. It co-starred Guy Pearce and was set in a colony of state-of-the-art humanoid robots and drew comparisons to Blade Runner.
He also appeared in indie drama Delia’s Gone, co-starring Marisa Tomei, based on a short story about a black man with an intellectual disability who is accused of his sister’s murder and embarks on a journey to clear his name and find out who’s responsible.
Fimmel plays a charismatic soldier with an enigmatic past who seeks to gain the Emperor’s trust in the 2024 TV series Dune: Prophecy, a prequel to the 2021 blockbuster movie Dune starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Momoa.
The series co-stars Emily Watson and is based on the New York Times bestselling novel Sisterhood of Dune.
Personal Life
Fimmel enjoys a variety of recreational activities such as Australian rules football, fishing, camping, horse riding, surfing, riding motorbikes, and visiting the beach.
Fimmel participated in a celebrity cricket match during the 2009 Australia vs England Hollywood Ashes alongside other Australian actors like Jesse Spencer, Cameron Daddo, celebrity chef Curtis Stone, INXS bass guitarist Garry Gary Beers, and cricket fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz.
Recognized for his striking appearance and blue eyes, Fimmel often prefers to go barefoot and comes across as laid-back in promotional interviews. He has expressed a desire to eventually return to farm life in Australia after his time in Hollywood.
