Edward Tom Hardy CBE, born on September 15, 1977, is an actor, producer, and screenwriter from England.

He began his acting career after completing his studies at the Drama Centre London, with his first film appearance in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001).

Hardy has taken on supporting roles in films such as Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) and RocknRolla (2008), before landing leading roles in movies like Bronson (2008), Warrior (2011), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Lawless (2012), This Means War (2012), and Locke (2013).

Notably, he portrayed “Mad” Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and both Kray twins in Legend, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Revenant.

Hardy has collaborated with director Christopher Nolan on three occasions, appearing in Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as Bane, and Dunkirk (2017).

More recently, he has taken on the role of Eddie Brock/Venom in the film Venom and its 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Additionally, Hardy portrayed Al Capone in the film Capone (2020).

Hardy’s television credits encompass a range of notable roles. He appeared in the acclaimed HBO war drama mini-series Band of Brothers (2001) and the BBC historical drama mini-series The Virgin Queen (2005).

Beyond his television work, Hardy has also made a mark on both British and American stages.

His performance as Skank in the production of In Arabia We’d All Be Kings (2003) earned him a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

Furthermore, he received the 2003 Evening Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer for his exceptional performances in both In Arabia We’d All Be Kings and Blood, where he portrayed Luca.

Hardy’s stage credits also include his role in the production of The Man of Mode (2007) and his critically acclaimed performance in the play The Long Red Road (2010).

Early Life

Edward Thomas Hardy was born in London’s Hammersmith district on September 15, 1977.

His parents are artist and painter Anne (née Barrett) and novelist and comedy writer Edward “Chips” Hardy.

Hardy’s mother is of Irish descent. He grew up in East Sheen suburb of London and attended Tower House School, Reed’s School, and Duff Miller Sixth Form College.

Hardy furthered his education at Richmond Drama School and the Drama Centre London, which is now part of Central Saint Martins.

He has cited Gary Oldman as his “hero” and even emulated scenes from Oldman’s work while studying at drama school.

Career

In 1998, Hardy emerged victorious in The Big Breakfast’s Find Me a Supermodel contest at the age of 21 (despite the show stating he was 20), securing a short-term deal with Models 1.

Hardy enrolled at Drama Centre London in September 1998, but left prematurely after landing the role of US Army Private John Janovec in the HBO-BBC mini-series Band of Brothers.

His big screen debut came in Ridley Scott’s war thriller Black Hawk Down in 2001.

During this period, Hardy dabbled in rapping and hip hop production alongside his friend Edward Tracy (as “Tommy No 1 + Eddie Too Tall”), releasing a mixtape titled Falling On Your Arse in 1999, which remained unreleased until 2018.

In 2002, Hardy portrayed the Reman Praetor Shinzon, a clone of USS Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Nemesis.

The subsequent year, he starred in the film Dot the i before heading to North Africa for Simon: An English Legionnaire, a tale of the French Foreign Legion.

Upon returning to the UK, Hardy appeared in the horror movie LD 50 Lethal Dose in 2003.

Hardy was honored with the 2003 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer for his roles in Blood and In Arabia We’d All Be Kings at the Royal Court Theatre and Hampstead Theatre.

He received a nomination for the 2004 Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer of 2003 in a Society of London Theatre Affiliate for his portrayal of Skank in In Arabia We’d All Be Kings.

Hardy starred alongside Emilia Fox in the BBC mini-series The Virgin Queen in 2005 as Robert Dudley, a childhood friend of Elizabeth I.

Dudley’s character was depicted as a conflicted young man torn between his wife’s affection, his feelings for Elizabeth, and his personal ambitions.

Hardy also featured in the BBC Four adaptation of the 1960s science fiction series A for Andromeda.

In 2007, he made an appearance in the drama series “Stuart: A Life Backwards” on BBC Two, which was based on a true story.

He took on the lead role of Stuart Shorter, a homeless man who had endured years of abuse and whose death was potentially a suicide.

Additionally, he portrayed Bill Sikes in the BBC mini-series “Oliver Twist” that same year, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel that aired on PBS Masterpiece Classic in the United States.

Moving forward to February 2008, he played the role of a drug-addicted rapist in the British horror-thriller “WΔZ”.

Later in September 2008, he appeared in Guy Ritchie’s London gangster film, “RocknRolla”, where he portrayed the character of Handsome Bob, a gay gangster.

In the same year, he starred in the film “Bronson”, which depicted the life of the real-life English prisoner Charles Bronson, who had spent a significant portion of his adult life in solitary confinement. For this role, he gained 42 pounds (19 kilograms) in weight.

Moving on to June 2009, he took on the lead role in Martina Cole’s four-part TV drama “The Take” on Sky One, portraying a gangster fueled by drugs and alcohol.

His performance earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the 2009 Crime Thriller Awards.

In August 2009, he appeared in ITV’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights”, playing the character of Heathcliff.

In early 2010, he starred in the play “The Long Red Road” at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

The play, written by Brett C. Leonard and directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, received positive reviews for his portrayal of Sam, an alcoholic trying to escape his troubled past.

In 2010, he played the role of Eames in Christopher Nolan’s science fiction thriller “Inception”, for which he received the BAFTA Rising Star award.

He also replaced Michael Fassbender in the 2011 film adaptation of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, which premiered at the 68th edition of the Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica in Venice on September 5, 2011.

In March 2010, he signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros.

In 2018, Tom Hardy portrayed Eddie Brock and the symbiote Venom in the film Venom, based on Marvel source material.

The movie was released on 5 October and marks the first installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. In 2019, Hardy took on the role of executive producer for the BBC/FX three-part miniseries A Christmas Carol.

In 2020, he starred in Josh Trank’s Al Capone biopic Capone.

Hardy is set to play British war photographer Don McCullin in a film adaptation of McCullin’s autobiography, Unreasonable Behaviour.

He reprised his role as Eddie Brock and Venom in the sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which he also co-wrote.

Additionally, Hardy will portray Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton in a biopic produced by the creators of Taboo.

This Shackleton film will depict one of the most gripping survival stories in exploration history and is being developed by Hardy’s production company, Hardy Son & Baker.

Philanthropy

In 2010, Hardy became an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, a UK youth charity which provides training, personal development, business start-up support, mentoring, and advice.In 2012, he and his then-girlfriend (now-wife) Charlotte Riley became patrons of Bowel Cancer UK.Prior to the inaugural Invictus Games held in London in September 2014, he, along with other entertainers and athletes, read the poem “Invictus” in a promotional video.

Personal Life

Hardy entered into matrimony with producer Sarah Ward in 1999, but their union came to an end in 2004.

In 2005, he crossed paths with assistant director Rachael Speed on the set of The Virgin Queen, and they embarked on a romantic relationship.

During their time together, they welcomed a son into the world. However, their relationship eventually came to a close in 2009.

It was in the same year that Hardy found love once again, this time with actress Charlotte Riley, whom he met while working on Wuthering Heights.

The couple tied the knot in July 2014 and are now proud parents to two sons.

Additionally, Hardy and Riley shared their lives with a rescue dog named Woodstock, and they even appeared together in a PETA advertisement advocating for pet adoption.

Tragically, Woodstock passed away on June 5, 2017, due to a severe case of polymyositis.

During his younger years, Hardy struggled with alcohol and crack cocaine, using them as coping mechanisms for the pressures he faced.

He battled with dysthymia, experiencing significant periods of depression.

At the age of 20, Hardy recognized the need for professional help and sought psychological assistance, acknowledging that his alcohol and drug use had spiraled out of control.

While portraying the role of prisoner Charles Bronson in the film Bronson, Hardy had the opportunity to meet the real-life Bronson on multiple occasions.

In fact, Bronson even sent Hardy his iconic mustache, hoping that Hardy would wear it in the film.

He has been observed training at Roger Gracie’s affiliate schools and alongside John Danaher.

As the lead ambassador for the REORG Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Foundation, a charity supported by the Royal Marines, Hardy actively promotes the use of martial arts as a means of recovery and overcoming physical and mental challenges for current and former military personnel.

Notably, on 19 June 2023, Hardy achieved the rank of purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
