Extraction is Netflix’s flagship action franchise, starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary who is sent into the most dangerous locations in the world to extract valuable targets and hostages.
Directed by former Captain America stunt-double, Sam Hargrave, fans adore the franchise’s no-holds-barred action and Hemsworth’s physical dedication to the role. So it comes as bittersweet news that Netflix has ordered a new TV spin-off of Extraction without Hemsworth in the leading role.
According to Variety, Netflix has ordered a new eight-episode TV series set in the world of Extraction. Hemsworth isn’t done with the franchise, and will return for the upcoming third film in the franchise, but the new series will be headlined by another Netflix star.
French actor Omar Sy (Lupin & The Intouchables) will lead the new series. The new show is being written, executive produced, and overseen by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), with Hargrave, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo executive producing.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe,” said Netflix’s vice president of scripted series, Peter Friedlander. “With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”
The new show will take the Extraction franchise to Libya. Sy will play a new, unnamed mercenary who is tasked with rescuing hostages from dangerous warring factions. The official description reads:
“Set in the high-octane world of ‘Extraction,’ this action thriller follows a mercenary (Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.”
The new Extraction TV series is another part of the franchise’s expansion. Following on from 2020’s Extraction, Hemsworth returned for a second outing as Tyler Rake, in the appropriately titled Extraction 2.
The sequel took Tyler to Europe to rescue the imprisoned family of a dangerous gang leader. The sequel was another major hit for Netflix, and fans are eager for Rake to return for a third mission.
The ending of Extraction 2 set up the next outing, with Idris Elba appearing as a mysterious character, who will likely play a major role in the threequel, although his return has not yet been confirmed.

Extraction 3 was confirmed to be in the works last October. When the threequel was announced, it was in the latter stages of the writing process.
The script is expected to have been finalized by now, with the film preparing to begin shooting later this year.
When asked about the third Extraction film, Executive producer and co-writer, Joe Russo, remained cagey about the film’s plot, saying:
“We’re in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. We’re hoping to go into production on it next year. It’s definitely filming next year. I’m just being cagey because it’s more fun.”
