England Crowned Women’s Euro 2025 Champions After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Win Over Spain

‎ ‎

England’s Lionesses thrillingly retained their European crown, defeating Spain 3-1 on penalties in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on Sunday night.

In a tense and hard-fought contest, Spain drew first blood when Mariona Caldentey nodded in a first-half opener, capitalizing on a moment of defensive lapse. But England responded swiftly after the restart, with Alessia Russo slotting home an equalizer that sent the match into extra time.

With no further goals after 120 minutes, the final was decided by spot-kicks, where Chloe Kelly emerged as the hero once again—coolly converting the winning penalty. Spain, however, faltered under pressure, with three players, including reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, missing from the spot.

The victory marks back-to-back European titles for England, solidifying their position as a dominant force in women’s football.

It also served as poetic redemption, having lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

Head coach Sarina Wiegman hailed her side’s mental strength and composure in the shootout, describing the win as a “massive moment for English football.”

With this win, the Lionesses continue to build a legacy—one rooted in consistency, resilience, and unshakable belief.
