Elon Musk Slams Trump’s Tax Bill as “Disgusting Abomination” in Major GOP Rift

‎ ‎

In a sharp and unexpected break from United States President Donald Trump, Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) CEO Elon Musk has fiercely condemned Trump’s new tax and spending legislation, calling it a “disgusting abomination” that threatens America’s fiscal future.

The bill—hailed by Trump as a signature part of his second-term agenda—passed the House last month, boasting massive tax cuts, a significant boost in defense spending, and a controversial $4 trillion increase to the debt ceiling.

But Musk, who once served on Trump’s advisory team and donated over $250 million to his 2024 campaign, has now taken a strong stand against the bill.

Shame on those who voted for it,” Musk posted on X, escalating his earlier criticism. “This outrageous, pork-filled bill will balloon the already massive budget deficit to $2.5 trillion and bury American citizens under a mountain of unsustainable debt.”

This outburst comes just days after Musk resigned from his White House role as head of the “Doge” cost-cutting task force, ending his 129-day tenure. The resignation has only added fuel to the ongoing controversy.

Trump Dismisses Concerns

Despite Musk’s warnings, Trump remains firm in his support for the legislation.

‎ ‎

“It’s one big, beautiful bill,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, brushing off Musk’s remarks.

Trump has touted the bill as essential for national security and economic recovery, despite bipartisan criticism over its cost. Estimates suggest it will add $600 billion to the deficit in the first fiscal year alone.

Trump also fired back at Senator Rand Paul, a vocal critic of the bill, claiming he “has very little understanding of the bill” and “is not popular in his own state.”

GOP Pushes Forward

Top Republican leaders are showing no signs of retreat.

  • Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the GOP is moving “full speed ahead.”

  • House Speaker Mike Johnson, who reportedly had a 20-minute call with Musk the day before, said the Tesla CEO is “terribly wrong” and “missing the bigger picture.”

Still, the bill’s plan to phase out electric vehicle tax credits—a key component of Musk’s Tesla business—has raised questions about whether personal business interests may have influenced Musk’s public dissent.

Behind Musk’s Frustration

Reports from Axios reveal that Musk had lobbied to have the FAA adopt his Starlink satellite system for air traffic control—a proposal that was ultimately rejected due to conflict-of-interest concerns. Insiders suggest this may have contributed to his hardline opposition to the bill.

A Party Divided

While Democrats have long criticized Musk, some now welcome his opposition.

“Even Elon Musk, one of Trump’s allies, thinks the bill is bad,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “That should tell you everything.”

With the GOP racing to finalize the legislation by July 4, and Trump proposing $9.4 billion in cuts (mostly from foreign aid and public broadcasters) to appease conservatives, internal divisions are becoming increasingly visible.

Musk’s stance signals a potential fracture in the Republican power structure—and hints at deeper ideological battles ahead.

“In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people,” Musk warned.
