Activist Lawyer Demands Ban or Regulation of BBNaija Over “Obscene Content” The Prominent human rights lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), urging them to immediately ban or heavily regulate the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, for allegedly promoting obscene, indecent, and profane content.

In a strongly worded letter titled “Urgent need to ban or regulate the content of the television programme described as Big Brother Naija for obscene, indecent, and profane content, pursuant to the NBC Act 1999,” Idam raised serious concerns about the ongoing 10th edition of the show.

According to him, the programme has, in just its second week, been characterized by “brazen exhibition of real-time obscene and pornographic actions.” He expressed dismay that the NBC, which in the past had sanctioned music videos for less explicit content, has remained “mute or unconcerned” about BBNaija’s broadcasts.

“The NBC has banned several music videos considered as promoting public indecency and pornography… yet remains silent on Big Brother Naija despite its obvious explicit content,” Idam wrote.

He acknowledged the show’s 18+ rating, but stressed that it remains too accessible to minors and uninterested viewers, especially as clips are regularly shared on social media platforms by the organizers.

“Such content is not only aired on national TV but also proudly shared on social media, in total disregard to public morality and decency,” he added.

Idam further argued that BBNaija lacks educational, artistic, or literary value, and contributes to Nigeria’s already worsening moral landscape. He called on the NBC to restrict the show to highly regulated, adult-only channels and prohibit the dissemination of clips online.

“The program neither offers educative, artistic, scientific nor literary value… its negative effect on the moral sensibilities of the Nigerian public cannot be underestimated,” he emphasized.

The petition gives NBC 30 days to act, failing which Idam promised to seek legal redress in court.
