Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has officially announced his retirement from international football, a surprising decision that has sparked widespread reaction among fans and pundits.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has earned 13 caps for the Super Eagles since making his debut in 2023, broke the news via his official Instagram page, where he penned an emotional farewell.
โProud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment โ the good and the bad. Thanks a lot, thank you all. I don hang boot,โ Boniface wrote.
The phrase โI don hang bootโ is Nigerian Pidgin for โI have retired.โ
Lack of Goals and Recent Frustrations
Bonifaceโs announcement comes on the heels of Nigeriaโs 1โ1 draw against Russia, in which the 23-year-old started but once again failed to score. He was subbed off in the second half, with his replacement, Tolu Arokodare, scoring the equalizer.
Despite his impressive form at club level, particularly in the Bundesliga, Boniface struggled to make a significant impact for the national team. He exits the international scene without a single goal in his 13 appearances.
A Short but Memorable Stint
Known for his power, physical presence, and technical skills, Boniface was once seen as a long-term attacking option for Nigeria. His sudden retirement has left many fans and analysts shocked, with some speculating that frustration over limited success with the national team may have influenced his decision.
As Boniface continues to flourish at Bayer Leverkusen, questions now arise about what led to this early exit and whether there might be a possibility of a future return.
