On May 12, 2025, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was hospitalized after being stabbed 14 times by another inmate at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles north of Los Angeles.

According to a statement on Lanez’s Instagram account, he sustained wounds to his back, torso, head, and face, resulting in both lungs collapsing. He was temporarily placed on a breathing apparatus but is now breathing on his own. The post added that, despite being in pain, Lanez is in good spirits and thankful for his recovery.

The attack occurred around 7:20 a.m. local time. Prison staff administered first aid before Lanez was transported to a local medical facility for further treatment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the motive behind the attack has not been disclosed.

Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. The incident, which took place after a party at Kylie Jenner’s residence, led to Lanez’s conviction on three felony gun-related charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

The case garnered significant attention within the hip-hop community, with various artists expressing support for both parties. Lanez has maintained his innocence and, from prison, has teased the release of a new album titled “Peterson.”
