Bae Su-ji (born October 10, 1994) is a South Korean singer, actress, and model better known as Bae Suzy. She was a member of the JYP Entertainment girl group Miss A.
She made her television debut in the series Dream High (2011) and has since appeared in Gu Family Book (2013), Uncontrollably Fond (2016), While You Were Sleeping (2017), Vagabond (2019), Start-Up (2020), and Anna (2022).
Her feature film debut was in Architecture 101. (2012). In her home country, she has been dubbed “The Nation’s First Love” following her successful film debut.
Bae was born on October 10, 1994, in Buk District, Gwangju, South Korea, to Bae Wan-young and Jeong Hyun-sook. She has a younger brother and an older sister. She graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2013. She worked as an online shopping model prior to her debut.

Bae auditioned for Mnet Superstar K in 2009 and made it through the preliminary round before being eliminated. She did, however, catch the eye of a JYP Entertainment scout and soon became a trainee.
In March 2010, Bae joined the newly formed group Miss A.

Bae joined Shinee’s Minho and Onew, as well as T-Jiyeon, ara’s as a regular host for MBC Show! Music Core in October 2010. Bae later hosted other events such as the Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Mnet 20’s Choice Awards where she won an award under the category “Hot New Star of 2011”.

Bae won Best New Actress as well as Best Couple with co-star Kim Soo-hyun at the KBS Drama Awards. Bae also appeared in the KBS TV reality show Invincible Youth 2. The first episode of the show began filming on October 19 and aired on November 11.
Bae made her film debut as the younger version of the female protagonist in Architecture 101 (2012). Architecture 101 was one of the top ten most-watched films in Korea during the first quarter of 2012, with over 4.1 million admissions nine weeks after its theatrical release, setting a new box-office record for Korean melodramas.
The same year, Bae co-starred with Gong Yoo and Lee Min-jung in the KBS drama Big, written by the Hong sisters.
Bae was the first Korean female celebrity to win a singer rookie award, a drama rookie award, a film rookie award, and a variety rookie award all in the same year.
She won Best New Actress at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance in Architecture 101. Bae won the Best Newcomer award in the Variety category at the KBS Entertainment Awards on December 22, 2012, for her role in Invincible Youth 2.
She co-starred in the historical fusion drama Gu Family Book with Lee Seung-gi in 2013. She won the Top Excellence award at the MBC Drama Awards and the Outstanding Actress award at the Seoul International Drama Awards for her acting. She also appeared on the variety show Healing Camp, becoming the show’s youngest guest.
In May 2014, Bae was cast as Jin Chae-seon, Korea’s first female pansori singer, in the film The Sound of a Flower (2015). During the Joseon era, a singer is not permitted to perform in public due to her gender, as depicted in the film.
Bae received pansori training for a year to prepare for the role. The following year, she collaborated with Taiwanese singer-actor Show Lo on the single “Together In Love,” which appeared on his album Reality Show.
Bae collaborated with Exo’s Baekhyun on a digital single titled “Dream” in January 2016. The song debuted at number one on Gaon’s weekly digital chart and went on to win the Mnet Asian Music Awards’ “Best Collaboration” award.
She then co-starred with Kim Woo-bin in the romance melodrama Uncontrollably Fond. Bae released two OSTs for the drama, one of which was written by herself. Bae’s wax figure debuted at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong in September 2016. She is the first Korean female celebrity to have a wax replica of herself created by Madame Tussauds.
Bae left JYP Entertainment on March 31, 2019, when her contract expired. She then signed a contract with Management SOOP, an acting agency.

Bae appeared in the 2020 drama Start Up as an aspiring entrepreneur who aspires to be Korea’s Steve Jobs by founding a start-up.
She made her comeback as a singer after 4 years with the single “Satellite” on February 17, 2022. She joined musician Kang Seung-2nd won’s album project three months later, singing the fifth track “Because I Love You,” a ballad about shy love feelings.
The same year, she stars in Coupang Play’s Anna as Lee Anna/Lee Yu-mi, a woman who lives a completely different life under a new identity, beginning with a small lie she made up.
In the six-episode series, audiences praised Bae for her acting abilities and portrayal of the character Anna’s emotions (reduced from the original eight-episode count). Bae released the digital single “Cape” and its music video on October 6.
Public perception and impact
Bae became one of the most sought-after endorsers in South Korea, and has been dubbed the “CF Queen” as a result of numerous endorsement deals ranging from cosmetics and apparel to basic commodities such as sugar.
In 2013, she earned more than 10 billion won from 14 endorsement deals in a single year. Fans dubbed Bae “Human Dior” in 2020 after noticing her constant wearing and promoting the brand. South China Morning Post estimated her net worth to be $25 million in 2021.
She was named House ambassador for French luxury fashion house Dior in April 2022 after attending the Dior Fall 2022 show at South Korea’s Ewha Womans University.
She became the first South Korean female artist to be named Ambassador of Elegance for Swiss luxury watch brand Longines in May 2022.
WJSN’s Bona, Oh My Girl’s Arin, Jung Chae-yeon, Secret Number’s Soodam, Berry Good’s Johyun, GFriend’s Yerin, Momoland’s Nayun, and Melody Day’s Yoomin are among the idols who have cited Bae as an influence or role model.
