Mikel Arteta has reportedly been issued a “firm ultimatum” by the Arsenal board, making his future dependent on winning the Premier League title this season. Reports from late January 2026 suggest that despite heavy summer investment and a current top-of-the-table position, the hierarchy has “had enough” of falling short and will seek a change on the bench if the championship is not secured.
Current Status and Board Expectations
While some sources close to the club, such as The Athletic, have previously stated that Arteta’s job remains secure following his contract extension until 2027, more recent sensational reports indicate a shift in pressure.
  • Hierarchy Pressure: The board has allegedly informed Arteta that he has no more excuses after being backed with significant signings like Viktor Gyökeres and Martin Zubimendi.
  • External Pressure: Former club figures, including Robert Pires, have publicly stated that the management will consider finding another coach if the title eludes them for a fourth consecutive year.
  • Arteta’s Stance: The manager remains defiant, stating that winning the league is “mathematically possible” and that he believes the squad has what it takes to finish first.
