Telecom company 9mobile has officially rebranded as T2, unveiling plans to transform into a digital-first operator focused on innovation and customer experience.

At the rebranding event, attended by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and key industry stakeholders, CEO Obafemi Banigbe described the change as a strategic transformation rather than a mere name switch.

โ€œWe are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,โ€ Banigbe said.

Under its new identity, T2 aims to leverage cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to deliver tailored products and faster services. The strategy targets Nigeriaโ€™s growing population of startups, creatives, and remote workers, who demand fast, flexible, and accessible digital solutions.

Banigbe reaffirmed the companyโ€™s commitment to placing customer experience at the heart of its operations, stating:

โ€œOur challenges are reminders, not defeats.โ€

He expressed gratitude to regulators, shareholders, partners, and staff, dedicating the rebrand to โ€œevery Nigerian dreaming of something better,โ€ and urged the nation to โ€œreimagine, rebuild, and relaunch.โ€

The transformation follows a three-year national roaming agreement signed in July with MTN Nigeria, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission. The deal gives T2 customers access to MTNโ€™s extensive network, improving coverage and service quality, especially in underserved regions.

This collaboration highlights a growing trend of partnerships among Nigerian telecom operators seeking to optimise resources amid fierce competition.

From Etisalat to 9mobile to T2

Launched in 2008 as Etisalat Nigeria, a joint venture between UAEโ€™s Etisalat Group, Mubadala Development Company, and Nigerian investors. It gained traction with 3G and 4G LTE services, growing its subscriber base to over 15 million by 2012. In 2017, regulatory and financial troubles, including $1.2 billion debt, led to Etisalat Groupโ€™s exit. However, in 2019, it restructured and rebranded as 9mobile after Teleology Holdings Limited acquired a controlling stake. Now in 2025, itbrands again as T2, marking a new chapter in its evolution.
